A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
